and their families to help them heal after the death of someone important to them.
Our Grief Support Services
Nā Keiki O Emalia offers in-person peer grief support groups that provides grieving children and teens with a secure environment to express themselves, participate in enjoyable activities, engage in art projects, and share stories about grief.
The support groups are completely free of charge and led by trained facilitators. Children and teenagers are grouped by age and can attend for as long as they need.
Nā Keiki O Emalia offers a secure environment where individuals can share their personal stories and emotions, find a path to healing, and learn to cope positively with their grief.
Participants can expect to receive support from peers who have gone through similar experiences while gaining an understanding that grief is a natural and normal reaction to death.
The sessions offer grief education and also facilitate a separate small group for parents to attend.

Nā Keiki O Emalia is a non-profit organization that offers grief support in a safe and supportive environment for children and teens who have experienced the death of someone important to them. We understand that the death of a parent, sibling, or close family member can be a deeply traumatic experience, and it can be difficult for children and teens to navigate their emotions and find the support they need.
Our facilitated peer grief support groups are designed to provide a positive and nurturing space for children and teens to share their experiences and emotions with others who have gone through similar experiences. Our grief support groups are led by trained facilitators who provide a supportive and compassionate environment for children and teens to explore their feelings and work through their grief. We believe that building connections with peers who have experienced similar experiences can be a powerful tool for healing and growth, and we are committed to making these services accessible to all.
At Nā Keiki O Emalia, we believe that every child and teen deserves access to grief support and resources to cope with the death of someone important to them. Our services are provided at no cost to families, thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters. We believe that removing financial barriers to accessing support is essential in ensuring that all children and teens can find the help they need to heal and grow after the death of someone important to them.
Educate
Nā Keiki O Emalia offers educational resources to families, schools, and community organizations to better equip them to provide grief support to children and teens.
Through our Project Ho’olana Initiative, we collaborate with schools to promote understanding of the grief process and how to effectively support children and teenagers facing social and educational difficulties stemming from the death of someone important. With the help of funding from the NY Life Foundation, we provide training and resources to educators and school staff to help them recognize the signs of grief and offer appropriate support to grieving students. Our goal is to help create a more compassionate and supportive learning environment for all students affected by the death of someone important to them.
In addition to our work with schools, Nā Keiki O Emalia also collaborates with community organizations to increase awareness of the impact of grief on a child’s life and establish more supportive avenues for children grieving as part of their programs. We offer grief support workshops and training to community groups and organizations to help them better understand the unique needs of grieving children and teens and offer practical strategies to support them.
Advocate
Nā Keiki O Emalia is committed to advocating for the needs of grieving children and their families within our community. We are passionate about enhancing programs, policies, and research to ensure that bereaved children have access to the resources and grief support they need to heal and grow.
On Maui alone, there are approximately 2,200 bereaved children who may lack adequate resources and assistance. The death of a significant person can trigger various challenges for children, such as social and educational difficulties, financial struggles, and health issues. At Nā Keiki O Emalia, we believe that it is our responsibility to represent the voices of bereaved children and their families in advocating for improved grief support and resources.
We work closely with policymakers, community leaders, and other organizations to raise awareness of the unique needs of grieving children and to advocate for policies and programs that support them. We also conduct research to better understand the impact of grief on children and their families, and to identify effective strategies for providing grief support.
