Children's Grief Awareness Day to be Observed on Maui on November 16th
On Thursday, November 16th, Nā Keiki O Emalia will mark Children’s Grief Awareness Day – a national day of awareness - with various activities that raise support for grieving children on Maui.
Children’s Grief Awareness Day is an annual event, founded in 2008 to help others understand the impact of death on children and their need for support. Nā Keiki O Emalia volunteers will be providing information at Makawao Farmers Market from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm, and Maui residents and visitors will find “ballot box” style donation boxes in over 50 retail stores around Maui, including at island-wide locations of Minit Stop, Tamura’s, and Ululani’s Shave Ice. Supporters of Nā Keiki O Emalia are also encouraged to host their own Facebook fundraisers on November 16th, using Facebook’s “Start a Fundraiser” tool. The Maui community is encouraged to participate on November 16th by spreading the word and showing support to the grieving children around us. The day has been proclaimed “Children’s Grief Awareness Day” in Maui County by Mayor Alan Arakawa.
Last week, Mayor Alan Arakawa, joined by Nā Keiki O Emalia Executive Director Brooke Brown and organization volunteer Uma Darling in the county building, proclaimed Thursday, November 16th, 2017 as Children’s Grief Awareness Day in Maui County. Children's Grief Awareness Day is observed nationally every year on the third Thursday in November (the Thursday before the U.S. holiday of Thanksgiving). This time of year is a particularly appropriate time to support grieving children because the holiday season is often an especially difficult time after a death.
By participating in this national movement, Nā Keiki O Emalia seeks to promote the availability of its grief support services in the community, while bringing attention to the fact that often support can make all the difference in the life of a grieving child.
“It’s so important that we raise awareness of the painful impact that the death of a loved one has in the life of a child,” said Brooke Brown, executive director of Nā Keiki O Emalia. “Children’s Grief Awareness Day is an opportunity to make sure that these children – our family members and neighbors - receive the support they need and are made aware of the options available to them, such as those our organization offers.”
November 16th Childrens Grief Awareness Day activites on Maui include:
A “ballot box” donation campaign at retail shops island wide for one day only: an effort to raise support for grieving children on Maui (see complete list of participating locations below);
An awareness campaign on Facebook, including a one-day peer-to-peer fundraising effort;
A Nā Keiki O Emalia information table from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Makawao Farmer’s Market, located across the street from Rodeo General Store on Baldwin Avenue in Makawao.
